The right cushion size is the difference between a sofa that looks styled and one that looks cluttered. Too small and cushions disappear into a deep seat; too large and there is nowhere left to sit. This guide shows which sizes work where, and how to layer them.
Fabmet cushion cover sizes: ten square sizes from 30 x 30 cm (12 in) to 70 x 70 cm (28 in). Covers are double-sided, made from a soft knit velvet (70% polyester, 30% cotton) and sold without the inner pad.

How Many Cushions, and Which Sizes?
Armchair
One cushion is plenty. Choose 40 x 40 cm for a compact chair or 45 x 45 cm for a roomy one.
Two-seater sofa
Two 45 x 45 cm cushions, one in each corner. Add a 40 x 40 cm in front of one of them for a relaxed, asymmetric look.
Three-seater sofa
Two 50 x 50 cm at the back corners, two 45 x 45 cm in front, and an optional fifth cushion in the middle.
Corner sofa
Start with 55 x 55 cm or 60 x 60 cm at the ends and in the corner, then layer 45 x 45 cm cushions in front. Five to seven cushions fill a corner sofa without crowding it.
Double bed
Two 60 x 60 cm or 65 x 65 cm behind your pillows, then two 45 x 45 cm in front.
King or super king bed
Two or three 65 x 65 cm or 70 x 70 cm at the back, with two or three 50 x 50 cm in front.
How to Measure
- Existing pad: lay it flat and measure seam to seam across the middle, not over the plump centre.
- Sofa depth: back cushions should take up no more than about a third of the seat depth.
- Sofa back: the largest cushions look best sitting level with, or just below, the top of the sofa back.
What Size Pad Should I Buy?
For a full, plump cushion, buy a pad 2 to 5 cm larger than the cover, for example a 50 x 50 cm pad for a 45 x 45 cm cover. For a flatter, tailored look, choose a pad the same size as the cover. Feather pads give that classic karate-chop dent; hollowfibre pads hold their shape and are a good choice for allergy sufferers.
Layering Tips
- Largest at the back, smallest at the front.
- Odd numbers (three or five) feel relaxed; even numbers feel formal and symmetrical.
- Mix one bold pattern with one or two quieter designs that share a colour.
- Our covers are double-sided, so you can flip them for a fresh look or to hide a mark.
